Job Description

The Consumer Behavior Analyst will be part of the Consumerism Informatics team. This group is responsible for delivering consumer insights and quantifying important consumerism metrics and indices. The team acts as internal consultants who provide research, analytical support, and individually-derived insights to CIGNA's product and marketing teams and other key stakeholders. This team is also responsible for connecting analytic insight to operational activities to maximize consumer loyalty and engagement. Key colleagues include leaders in clinical informatics, employer consulting, strategy and product development, marketing and IT. Research and actionable information stemming from the Consumerism Informatics team is highly valued as a critical success factor for the organization and has a direct and immediate impact on the success of the business. 

The incumbent will take a hands-on approach to analyzing business problems, recommending and developing new metrics and methodologies, designing and executing analytic research and recommending actions to clients and stakeholders. Historical analysis, data visualization, statistical analysis, predictive modeling, data mining and business optimization are among the functions the consumer behavior analyst will perform. In addition to delivering specific research requests and project initiatives, he/she will be charged with proactively uncovering opportunities for further business-development and product innovation and with presenting & rationalizing his/her opinions to business partners. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Determines research/analytic requirements by consulting with internal and external customers. 

  • Investigates research questions and hypotheses using large-scale public and private data sets and by conducting primary and secondary research.

  • Creates and administers data collection tools as needed (e.g., sample survey, key informant survey, needs assessments). 

  • Meets end-user needs and project objectives by identifying available resources and developing applied research and health care evaluation designs.

  • Satisfies customer research questions and test hypotheses by selecting and applying statistical methods and data analysis techniques. 

  • Verifies the appropriateness of statistical models and modifies analyses when appropriate. 

  • Presents findings to customers by interpreting results of data analyses and communicating clearly to customers who are not experts in research and statistics. 

  • Helps determine the direction and strategy for the development of actionable, clinical analyses and reports as well as supporting the general information requirements of line medical managers.

  • Develops process, engagement, behavior change and outcomes measurement tools, reports and systems. Uses traditional, industry accepted tools and methods but also applies creative thinking to bring innovation to the measurement of CIGNA's business. Translates information to actionable recommendations. For example:

  • Uses consumer segmentation tools and market research databases to analyze and predict consumer behaviors, preferences and choices; 

  • Supports planning for targeted marketing campaigns and analyzes results (success, lift rate)

  • Designs and develop statistical studies, sampling methodology, and data collection processes, including creation of survey instruments.

  • Identifies new patterns and root cause drivers

  • Packages information in new, useful and actionable ways

  • Performs assessment and monetization of discrete programs and products as well as the end-to-end health care value chain;

  • Develops new stratifications and classifications as well as business rules for data mapping and data transformation

   

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree and 5-7 years experience utilizing advanced analytics (linear, multi-variant regression, choice tests, factor analysis, regression trees, and other statistical analysis techniques) within consumer-oriented organizations. 

  • Excellent SAS and/or SQL programming skills. MS Access, COGNOS also desirable. Experience manipulating data and working with large relational databases require. Masters Degree required, prefer degree such as MS in Applied Mathematics, Statistics or MPH or MBA with experience in related field such as healthcare economics, pharmacoeconomics, marketing analytics, clinical informatics, web analytics or research background. 

  • Candidates should possess excellent organizational skills to facilitate the coordination and completion of multiple and varied projects, as well as written and oral communication skills that allow clear and concise presentation of conclusions and recommendations to a variety of audiences.

  • Ideal candidate will be a self-starter with the ability to be effective in a large, complex and highly matrixed organization. Strong communications and influencing skills are essential.

  • Outstanding knowledge, understanding and experience in statistical analysis and applicable analytic tools including expertise in the following statistical and data-mining programs/software: SPSS, excel, SAS, SQL, Oracle, and other relevant tools. 

  • Track record of uncovering consumer behaviors and motivations that result in breakthrough business insights; 

  • Strong client focus and proactive business orientation; 

  • Ability to focus on both the details and "big picture" at the same time; 

  • Solid track record of designing, executing, interpreting and delivering insightful and actionable research; 

  • Experience doing market research, web analytics and product development and other consumer oriented research; 

  • Support the development of predictive models and assist with design and implementation and related data analysis

  • Provide technical and functional requirements design assistance and work with IT to scale prototypes and put models into production
